Sara / Alpujarras

unspecifiedSarah moved to Andalucia in 1993 with a caravan, a horse and a dream. She set up the trekking centre and never looked back! Originally from the New Forest, UK, Sarah has ridden horses all her life. She now knows the Sierra Nevada foothills she calls home like the back of her hand. Passing this knowledge onto experienced riders who in turn guide you on your holiday, she can stay at the ranch and manage the many horses, cats, dogs, chickens, geese, ducks and people who help keep the whole association running smoothly. Sarah lives at the ranch full time with her two teens.

On offer are rides between 2 hours and multi-day excursions into the hills and mountains. Novices and children are most welcome, as are single travellers. For the advanced rider there are challenging trails on offer in the glorious mountain scenery of the Sierra Nevada.

Her Trekking Centre offers horse riding holidays in Spain´s most southern mountain range. We are situated on a small plateau at a height of 1200 meters above a little white town in the Alpujarra region of Andalusia, close to Granada. Wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, hills and Sierra Nevada mountains are evident in all directions! You can even see the coastline of Africa on a clear day.
We are very lucky having the Alpujarras hills and Sierra Nevada mountains on our doorstep. Easy hacks or challenging trail rides. There is something here for all. We have a varied choice of rides from 2 hours to a 8 day... multi-day trail ride high in the mountains.

Ride through pine forests and alpine meadows to wooded valleys and gorges as well as almond, olive and orange groves.

This is an opportunity to experience the beautiful and diverse land of the Alpujarras, ranging from pine forests and alpine meadows to wooded valleys and gorges as well as almond, olive and orange groves. A chance not only to discover spectacular landscapes and inspiring scenery, but also to experience the culture of the area.

Day 1: You will transfer from Málaga or Granada airport (cost not included) to the tiny spa town of Lanjarón, ‘the gateway to the Alpujarras’. Dinner will be prepared for you at a simple and beautiful Spanish farmhouse or a popular, local village hotel. Your first night will be spent there.

Day 2: You will go up to the ranch to meet your horse & guide, then begin by heading north up above the Lanjarón River gorge. You will then ride through the ancient oak forests towards the summit of the Pico del Caballo, reaching over 2000 metres of altitude, before dropping through the logging trails of the pine forests to Puente Palo. A picnic lunch will then be enjoyed in the pine forest, before riding east to an idyllic location high on the slopes of the Poqueria valley, where you will spend a relaxing night in the beautiful mountain cottages. Views extend across the Poqueria valley to the white washed mountain villages of Capileira, Bubion and Pampaniera.

Day 3: Today you will head north following the Poqueria valley with the picturesque town of Capilera to your east. This is one of the highest towns in Spain. You will trek towards Mulhacén which has the loftiest and most majestic peak on the mainland. With the snowy backdrop, this valley is truly stunning. Crossing mountain pasture land on a little known old Moorish bridlepath, you will head up through the pine trees to Refugio Piuca. Trekking west along mountain logging tracks with a stop for a picnic lunch on the hillside. After lunch you reach the Mirador de Cañar view point before passing down through the Prado de las Liebres (Meadow of the Hares) to the ranch below. Time for some relaxation and maybe a dip in the pool before dinner.

Day 4: This is a lovely long trail ride as you head up cobbled mule paths through an ancient chestnut forest to the waterfalls of the Rio de Lanjarón. High into the mountains following the river gorge towards the snowline with stunning views of the mountains as you sit under a landmark aged chestnut tree to enjoy a relaxing picnic. After lunch you will follow the old Moorish water channels, before heading down to the Ranch & to the farmhouse.

You will be wished a fond farewell and transferred to either Málaga or Granada airport (not included).

Please note the itinerary may vary and be altered according to the abilities of the group or the discretion of the guide.

We had the most amazing three day trail ride high into the mountains and a rather challenging downhill decent into the valley on the forth day ride out on the best horses we have ever ridden, so sure footed and well kept.

Mel

There is no better way to explore the beautiful landscape! The horses are satisfied and reliable. As a longtime rider, I felt like real experts care about horse and riders here.

Its from all the horseback riding I have done in my life (Equador, Mexico, Guatemala etc.) The most beautiful scenery to go in with your horse. And the place is so pure high in the mountains, the girls helping so good and warm. Yes it’s unbelievable loving energy in an unbelievable scenery with great horses!

Highly recommended

Lucy

Her horses are well looked after. They all have their own personality. The trek rides were brilliant, thrilling and fun. The views are amazing. I’m an experienced rider but I still learnt a lot being there for that week.

Alpujarra Horse Trek

horse riding holiday alpujarras andalucia spainYou will follow old Moorish mule paths and valleys where the horse, mule and oxen still pull the plough and harvest the land. Each day of the ride you will pass through different terrain; from beautiful mountain pastures to pine forest, almond and olive groves. Here is an opportunity not only to discover spectacular landscapes and inspiring scenery, but also to experience a culture where tradition remains very much part of everyday life.
There are plenty of opportunities to canter or gallop, but occasionally, you will have to lead your horse downhill when the terrain is steep.

Day 4: Today you will head south down past goat farms and vineyards, passing the Ermita de Padre Eterno and maybe stopping for refreshments in the local Spanish bar, Los Llanos. You will ride past the tiny Ermita de Virgen Fatima, through the olive groves of Padre Eterno for a picnic lunch and then on to the river bed to follow the river towards the farmhouse accommodation for a delicious, well deserved dinner.
Day 5: Today, you head through Órgiva town and above to the Mirador sobre el Cementario de Órgiva (Órgiva view point) before riding on to the ruta Olivos Centenarios (the Route of the Century Old Olives). Stopping under olive trees for a picnic before heading South until you reach the immense riverbed of the Rio Guadafeo. This is where the horses really enjoy themselves, stopping for a splash and a drink in the river, before heading across the valley and to the Spanish farmhouse for the night.
Day 6: Today, you will head down to Órgiva for a stroll round the local market. The market offers a wide range of local produce and artisan products as well as clothes, shoes and tourist souvenirs. Órgiva is the largest town of the Alpujarras. After the market you will take part in a fast valley ride with a picnic on the hillside overlooking Mount Lújar and the impressive mountains of the Sierra de la Contraviesa, before heading up above the town of Lanjarón for the night.
