The owner and guide, Rafael is a political science graduate who preferred the peace rafael-1of a small village in the mountains to the hustle and bustle of his home city, Madrid. He moved to the Alpujarras more than twenty years ago, where he started his horse-riding adventure. Sierra Nevada and the Alpujarras
With its rich variety of landscapes and consistently beautiful scenery, La Alpujarras, situated on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains, offers some of the most spectacular horse riding countryside in Europe.The proximity of the Mediterranean and the altitude, gives the region very diverse microclimates, flora and geological formations. As a result riding through this ever changing landscape is an unforgettable experience.Expertly led week long horse riding holidays (6 days 7 nights) and short breaks (3 days, 4 nights) through the Sierra Nevada National and Natural Parks. The rides run from March through to November and are designed to explore as much as possible of these unique and captivating lands.

This program will allow us to enjoy the Alpujarras region in 4 days. This area has a landscape of exceptional natural beauty. The varied topography provides the most surprising contrasts in scenery, from the snowy heights of the Sierra Nevada National Park, to the fertile valleys of olive and almond groves, and on a clear day one can even glimpse the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. A meeting point of the Arab and Christian worlds, the once impregnable stronghold for the different peoples who settled here. Riding deep into the heart of this region as we pass though several villages it is much like travelling in the Spain of the 19th Century, where time has stopped for travellers who wonder at the changing face and vegetation of the different micro-climates. The route generally follows old bridle paths which snake through numerous ravines where the snowmelt waters run.

DAY 1. CAPILEIRA.

Welcoming and introduction of the guide. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel Finca Los Llanos*** in Capileira.

DAY 2. BUBIÓN – TREVÉLEZ.

Drive to the riding centre in Bubión (2 Km away from Capileira). Introduction of the horses. We will start by climbing up along bridle paths through the Blood Ravine to the track that leads us to Trevélez with views of the villages of the Poqueira and La Taha Valleys. Picnic en route. During the ride there are some opportunities for gallops with a magnificent panoramic view of the Sierra Contraviesa and Lújar opposite us. Descend to Trevélez by a bridle path where we will arrive in time for some beers with tapas. There will be the opportunity to visit some of the ham drying houses of Trevélez, famous for its hams and considered the highest village in Spain at an altitude of 1,700m. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel La Fragua **. A five hour ride.

DAY 3. TREVÉLEZ – JUVILES - LOS BÉRCHULES.

After crossing the bridge over the river, we will start this route by a bridle path that climbs the left slope of the ravine, leaving behind the village from which it takes its name. Riding down to Los Berchules by a track. Picnic on the way. Once again we will enjoy the beauty of the Sierra Contraviesa and Sierra Gádor, this time in the province of Almería. On a clear day we will have the view of the Mediterranean Sea and the silhouette of the mountains of Africa in front of us. Descent to Juviles for lunch. The journey continues on horseback to Los Berchules by a bridle path. Dinner and accommodation tonight in a very comfortable, family-run hotel - El Cercado***. Option for Spa services.

DAY 4. LOS BÉRCHULES - CÁDIAR.

From Los Bérchules, we will descend to Narila, where we will stop for water the horses and visit a breeding farm of P.R.E. (Spanish Pure Breed) horses. The ride passes through Cádiar village and we will finish the ride at the beautiful hotel Alquería de Morayma**, where we should arrive just on time for lunch. Three and a half hours riding. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

DAY 5. CÁDIAR - BUBIÓN.

Crossing the Guadalfeo river, we will join the path that will lead us to Lobras, Nieles and Càstaras. We will continue until we reach the impressive gorge of Las Carihuelas de Busquístar, where we will descend to cross the Trevélez river, and we will follow the path which leads to the village of Busquístar for lunch. After lunch two more hours riding to Bubión. A six hour ride. Farewell dinner in a local restaurant and accommodation at the hotel Finca Los Llanos*** in Capileira.

DAY 6. After breakfast, we say goodbye.

DAY 4. LOS BÉRCHULES - CÁDIAR.

We ride now to the dry riverbed of Yator where, later on, we will take the path that leads up to the hill that separates Sierra Nevada and Sierra Contraviesa with breathtaking panoramic views over these two mountains. The ride passes through the village of Cádiar and will finish at the beautiful hotel Alquería de Morayma**, where we should arrive just on time for lunch. Four hours riding. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

DAY 5. CÁDIAR -CADIAR.

The ride today follows the bridle path across the hill over the Guadalfeo River where later we will descend to ride across its subtropical vegetation for a while. We ride now on the other side of the river where after a gallop we will get the way back to the hotel on time for lunch. Option to visit to the wine cellar and the olive-oil mill of the hotel Alquerìa de Morayama** with an explanation of the process to produce the wine and the olive oil.A three hours ride. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

DAY 6. CÁDIAR - BUBIÓN

Crossing the Guadalfeo river, we will join the path that will lead us to Lobras, Nieles and Càstaras. We will continue until we reach the impressive gorge of Las Carihuelas de Busquístar, where we will descend to cross the Trevélez river, and we will follow the path which leads to the village of Busquístar for lunch. After lunch two more hours riding to Bubión. A six hour ride. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel Finca Los Llanos*** in Capileira.

DAY 7. – BUBIÓN –VALLE DEL POQUEIRA - BUBIÓN

A morning ride enjoying the beautiful panorama of the Poqueira valley. Back to Bubión, where we arrive for lunch. Three hours on horseback. Free afternoon for sightseeing. Farewell dinner in a local restaurant and accommodation at the hotel Finca Los Llanos*** in Capileira.

This three-day driving program is an ambitious climb to the foot of the Mulhacen mountain (3,478 m), the highest mountain on the Spanish peninsula. During the route, the Sierra Nevada will reveal its varied landscapes, changing vegetation and sometimes very challenging terrain. It is a route for self-confident riders, who will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, the surrounding mountain ranges and the grandeur of the high mountain. Trevelez, the charming white village that was used as the basis for the climb, is known as the highest village in Spain and also for the salted Spanish ham, so living in the mountain village and gastronomy will also be part of the experience.

DAY 1. CAPILEIRA.

DAY 2. BUBIÓN - TREVÉLEZ.

Drive to the riding centre in Bubión (2 Km away from Capileira). Introduction of the horses. We will start by climbing up along bridle paths to the Barranco de la Sangre (Blood Ravine) riding through stunning scenery and enjoying the beautiful panorama of the Poqueira Valley in the Natural Park of the Sierra Nevada, declared Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO. In front of us the sierras Lújar, Contraviesa and Gádor. We continue climbing to the track that leads us to Trevélez with views of the villages of La Taha Valley. Picnic en route. During the ride there are some opportunities for gallops with a magnificent panoramic view of the Sierra Contraviesa and the Mediterranean Sea opposite us. Descend to Trevélez by a bridle path where we will arrive in time for some beers with tapas. There will be the opportunity to visit some of the ham drying houses of Trevélez, famous for its hams and considered the highest village in Spain at an altitude of 1,700m. DAY 3. TREVÉLEZ - TREVÉLEZ 

We will ride towards the snowy peaks of the National Park of the Sierra Nevada. We cross the ravines where the melt water flows and we reach the idyllic Siete Lagunas (3,100mts) where we will picnic at the foot of Mulhacén, which at 3,478 m in altitude is the highest peak of the peninsula. After a short rest, we descend back to Trevélez, where we will spend the night. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel La Fragua **. Five and a half hours riding today.

DAY 4. TREVÉLEZ - BUBIÓN 

We will start by climbing up along a bridle path with views of the village of Trevelez, to the track which will take us to the Bina Ravine where after few meters we take the Sulayr path to climb through oak woods again to the top of the Loma del Jabalí, with stunning views of the Trevélez and Guadalfeo valleys. Later on we ride to Las Alcubillas for a picnic. With an altitude of 2.240m is the highest point of our itinerary for this journey with a magnificent panoramic vista of the foothills of the Sierra Contraviesa and Lújar opposite. On a clear day, you can even see right across the Mediterranean to Morocco. We ride now by a track and along a bridle path descending through pine woods with views of the villages of the Poqueira Valley that leads us to Bubion. A 5 hour ride. DAY 5. After breakfast, transfer to the airport.

SIERRA NEVADA - TABERNAS DESERT TRAIL

Sierra Nevada-Tabernas Desert Route 2019

Without doubt, the SIERRA NEVADA-TABERNAS DESERT route, with 6 days on horseback, is the most varied ride. This program goes through two Nature Reserves of unique natural beauty which give the route its name: The Sierra Nevada, with its snowy peaks and mountainous landscape, and the Tabernas Desert, the most important desert-like zone in Europe. The route starts high up in the Sierra and makes its way down to the fertile slopes and valleys where olives, figs, almonds, and even wine are produced. Then, suddenly, the unique topographical conditions render the route into a true, western movie style desert, of canyons and dry riverbeds where numerous spaghetti-westerns films have been made. The expedition ends in Granada with the option to visit the Alhambra.

After crossing the bridge over the Trevélez river, we will start this route by a bridle path that climbs the left slope of the ravine, leaving behind the village from which it takes its name. Once again we will enjoy the beauty of the sierras Contraviesa, Lújar and Gádor, this one already in the province of Almería. Descent along a more gentle path to Juviles, where we will have lunch. Descend to Tímar along a narrow path through the gorge. Then we will take the bridle path to the beautiful Hotel Alquería de Morayma (**, close to Cádiar. We have descended over 1,000 m in 5 hours. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

DAY 4. CÁDIAR – PICENA

Riding first over the hills with stunning panoramic views of Sierra Nevada and the sierras of Contraviesa and Gádor, then we will ride to Ugíjar along the dry riverbed. Picnic on the way. In the afternoon we will ride up to Picena, A six hour ride. Dinner in Casa Paco and accommodation in Apartments Picena.

DAY 5. PICENA - BENECID

After breakfast ,we start our ride crossing the village of Picena and the Bayarcal river, where we enter the Almería province. Picnic at Guarros. Leaving for Benecid passing by Laujar de Andarax, important wine-growing area. A six hour ride. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel La Marmita de Ahlam***.

DAY 6. BENECID – ALCORA

Across Sierra Gádor, riding on a track enjoying the open view of Sierra Nevada, on the other side of the Andarax river, we arrive at Cortijo Cacín for a picnic. After a short rest, we ride to the old “Venta de Alcora” and then to the Casita de Cristal beneath the pine trees where we leave the horses. Drive back to Benecid (21Km). Dinner and accommodation at the hotel La Marmita de Ahlam***. A four and a half hour ride.

DAY 7. ALCORA – ALBOLODUY - GRANADA

Drive to Casita de Cristal to meet the horses for our last four hour ride to the desert. Descend to the Andarax river and to Rágol. Riding to the mountain of Montenegro through the Rambla (dry river bed) of Guadix, with many opportunities for canters and where we start to discover the first desert landscape. Descend to the colourful dry riverbed of Alboloduy through a labyrinth of canyons similar to those seen in numerous spaghetti-western films. At the end of the Rambla de Los Yesos, we will arrive at Alboloduy, at the edge of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. After saying goodbye to the horses, lunch in the village. After lunch drive to Granada (2 hours drive). Farewell dinner in a typical restaurant and visit to the old part of Granada with the Alhambra right opposite us. Accommodation in Hotel Maciá Plaza**.

DAY 8. GRANADA

Farewell after breakfast. OPTION: For those who want, they will have this day the opportunity to visit the Alhambra.

THE HAND OF FATIMA TRAIL

The Hand of Fatima route is a great opportunity to get to know the most important aspects of Andalusia with its horse culture and history guiding us through this region ́s nature, gastronomy and its world class historic sites. It starts with four days riding in the Sierra Nevada National Park, with its changing landscape ranging from high mountain environments to fertile Mediterranean valleys. We will ride through several mountain villages which for centuries were a meeting point of the Arab and Christian worlds. This region is famous for its cured hams and local wine. There will be time to visit the Alhambra in Granada and the magnificent Mosque of Cordoba, both UNESCO World heritage sites, and during the last two days in Cordoba a visit to the Spanish Pure Bred Horses Royal Stables and some riding through the olive dotted landscape will complete the experience. This route is named after “The Hand of Fatima” novel by Spanish writer and horseman Ildefonso Falcones, a recommended read that will guide the rider through the history and landscapes that will be enjoyed during this route.

From Los Bérchules, we will descend to Narila, small village where, during the Rebellion of Moriscos, King Fernando de Valor was crowned. The ride goes on towards Cádiar village and nearby from the hotel Alquería de Morayma**, where we should arrive just on time for lunch. In the afternoon we will have the opportunity to visit the wine cellar and the olive-oil mill of the Alquería with an explanation of the process to produce the wine and the olive oil Approximately three hours riding. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

DAY 5. CÁDIAR - BUBIÓN Crossing the Guadalfeo River, we will join the path that will lead us to Lobras, Nieles and Càstaras. We will continue until we reach the impressive gorge of Las Carihuelas de Busquístar, where we will descend to cross the Trevélez river, and we will follow the path which leads to the village of Busquístar for lunch. DAY 6. CAPILEIRA – GRANADA – CORDOBA

After breakfast, transfer to Granada where you will have the option to visit the Alhambra or to have a sightseeing tour of the l’Albaicín, the old part of Granada. Transfer in the afternoon to the rural houses of Cuevas del Pino in Villarrubia, 12Km from Cordoba and hidden in a valley in the foothills of the Sierra Morena. Dinner in Cordoba and walk around the historical part of this beautiful Andalusian city. Accommodation at Cuevas del Pino.

DAY 7. CORDOBA- PALMA DEL RÍO

After breakfast, transfer to Cordoba to visit the Royal Stable and the Mosque. Transfer to Palma del Río (30’). Lunch in the village and a 3 hour ride with P.R.E. horses (Spanish Pure Breed) in the Riding Center of La Herradura. Farewell dinner in a restaurant at the old part of Palma del Río and accommodation in the wonderful hotel Monasterio de San Francisco***, National Architecture Award.

DAY 8. PALMA DEL RÍO - OSUNA–GRANADA

After breakfast, transfer to Osuna (40’) for a 2 hour ride around Las Viñas Farm. After a small snack, transfer to the airport of Granada.

Information

Our main activity is horse-riding. We organise rides by the hour and, particularly, treks of several days on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. We also run incentive trips for companies, including mixed programs in jeep and on horseback, picnics and visits to the most interesting places in the area such as museums, artisans’ workshops, wine bodegas and Serrano ham curing establishments.

For groups with a minimum of 4 people, we offer tailored treks to suit your preferences. Do not hesitate to contact us in order to let us know the type of route you are interested in.

Transfers

Transfers from/to Granada airport will be included in the ride price. Transfers from/to Malaga will be charged a supplement of €75 per person each way, and for a minimum of 2 people for the transfer. Transfers for one person will be charged at the regular rate (€150+ 10% TVA).

Pick-up at the airport will be at Granada: 18:30h. These pick-up times can be adjusted to flight arrival time, but never more than 30 minutes later than the specified times. If you cannot arrange your flight according to these pick-up times, you will need another transfer, and you will be charged accordingly.

Another  possible option if you cannot find suitable flights to Granada in time for the ·standard pick up" is to fly the day before and spend a night in a nearby hotel and to enjoy a bit sight-seeing.

Western Cuba

The westernmost province in Cuba also called the Green Province, is a gift of nature. Tobacco is grown in the extraordinarily fertile lands and valleys. This tobacco is used to produce the Habanos old Cuban cigars, the best in the world. The province has two mountain ranges, one of them is the Sierra de los Órganos, of great geological interest, including the Viñales Valley with its “mogotes” or pincushion hills, and many caves, including the Indian Cave, and the Santo Tomás Cave System. Viñales is the ideal place for watching local indigenous wildlife.In all of our programs, you have the opportunity to enjoy the Cuban hospitality, sleeping in the guajiros (field workers) farms, having lunch together or drinking and dancing with them during the evening.
